GENEVA – Galileo / EGNOS Enhanced Driver Assistance

Benefits

Urban Assist mainly aims to significantly reduce the number of urban road accidents and consequently the number of injured and killed people in road traffic. Besides this main target, collision avoidance has also positive influence on other aspects important for the community. It helps to reduce traffic jams, resource consumption, air pollution and CO2 – emissions. Improved safety for all road users (passengers and outsides) shall be enabled through suitable, inexpensive sensors with short time-to-market and safety relevant driver assistance systems for collision avoidance and collision mitigation.

Main benefits of GENEVA therefore are:
  • Driver support in standard situations to improve safety before or when entering a critical situation.
  • Development of a scalable, inexpensive high accuracy positioning system for urban environment with build-in integrity monitoring.
  • Enrichment of existing map technologies for attributes needed for safety relevant driver assistance systems in urban environment and their standardization.
  • Development of algorithms to verify attributed maps with sensors for environment perception like camera/image processing and laser/radar.
  • Development of algorithms to verify calibration of sensors for environment perception. If possible, systematic errors should be estimated and used for recalibration.

Urban Assist is a first element of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) for vehicles where reliable GNSS (EGNOS/EDAS and Galileo) services will be the key enabler.

The development of interoperable Galileo/GPS/EGNOS mass market receivers and related core technologies is hence important. Common features of mass market receivers are large scale production, low unit costs, small size, low power demand and potentially also the hybridisation capability with other sensors and platforms.
